Virginia McCaskey may be old. She may not run the Chicago Bears franchise directly. People cannot and should not let that fool them. This woman has lived and breathed Bears football for most of her nearly century-long life. She feels it when the team wins and feels it even more when the team loses. She is her father's daughter, after all.
What people might not realize is how plugged into the game she still is. It's not like she just does her own thing each week and then heads to Soldier Field for games. She follows the sport closely. She knows who a lot of the best players around the league are. The woman is a genuine fan, regardless of her age.
That's why one can just picture what must've happened when she received the news about the Khalil Mack trade. Her son George, team chairman, explained to Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times exactly how he broke the news to her. The reaction? Solid gold.
Virginia McCaskey learned of the Mack trade in an elevator
McCaskey wanted to tell his mother right away but knew he had to keep it a secret. There was no way he could let the news slip out too early. So he had to get her alone somehow. On August 31st, after a staff meeting, he caught her in an elevator at Halas Hall and didn't waste the precious seconds he had.“I said, ‘Mom we’re thinking about trading for Khalil Mack of the Raiders,” McCaskey told the Sun-Times, his first comments on the franchise-altering trade that sent draft picks to the Raiders. “It’s going to cost us two No. 1s.’ “Her jaw drops. And then the doors open. That was the end of the conversation.”That about sums it up doesn't it? Virginia had the same exact reaction so many Bears fans did when the news broke 24 hours later. Utter shock followed by inexpressible joy. The matriarch knows her time grows short. Her family and all the team executives and coaches are working hard to get this team another championship before it's too late. The Mack trade is the most significant step they've taken in almost 10 years towards that mission. If only they had gotten it on video. That would've been priceless.
