People talk about which draft prospects they like for their teams all the time. So what about looking at it purely from a scheme fit point of view for the Chicago Bears? A player that looks like he'd slide right into their system, offense or defense, and play well. There are plenty of notable names worth mentioning. However, one that seemed to stand out is Clemson cornerback A.J. Terrell.
The Bears run a 3-4 defensive system under Chuck Pagano. This demands a particular type of cornerback. One with size, athleticism, and physicality who is able to play up in press one-on-one. Dantzler is 6'1 and showed no fear about getting in the face of opposing receivers. He showcased legitimate 4.42 speed at the scouting combine, so there's no concern about him being a liability against the deep ball.
Most feel once he adds more weight to his frame to handle tackling, he'll be a really good football player in the NFL.
"Possessing a loaded toolbox to excel in man coverage, Terrell is long, rangy and fluid with good eye discipline to bait throws. He also finds considerable success in soft press coverage and he is extremely sticky crowding routes in quick game. Terrell does need to add play strength and become more consistent as a tackler, but he projects as a scheme-versatile starter with an overall exciting ceiling. "
Can the Chicago Bears get A.J. Terrell in the draft?
So the obvious question becomes if he's such a great fit, do the Bears have a legitimate chance to draft him? The best answer to this is maybe. Terrell is sort of in that limbo where he could go at the bottom of the 1st round or the middle of the 2nd. Bleacher Report's Matt Miller has him ranked as the 56th best prospect in the 2020 class. Kyle Crabbs of The Draft Network has him at 50th. Lance Zielein of NFL.com pegged him at #38. So it feels like Chicago should have favorable odds to land the cornerback.
With Prince Amukamara gone, the defense has depth concerns at the position along with no clear answer as to who will start opposite Kyle Fuller. Third-year man Kevin Toliver and free agent addition Tre Roberson look like the favorites to compete for the job at this point. Expectations are though that the Bears will add another body to the mix. Probably in the draft. If it ends up being Terrell, the team should feel good about their situation.
He had a productive career at Clemson. In two seasons as a starter, he collected five interceptions, 64 tackles, two trips to the national championship game, and one championship trophy. He is talented, experienced, and battle-tested.
