For all the people begging the Chicago Bulls to just fire Jim Boylen already, they're going to have to wait. New VP of Basketball Operations Arturas Karnisovas has more important matters to attend to. With no NBA season in progress, there's no point in worrying about that. His greater responsibility is finding the best and brightest possible to fill out his new front office.
Especially the general manager position.
It took Karnisovas just one conversation to realize Gar Forman had to go. For the first time in over a decade, that job is vacant. The Bulls are hoping to add somebody who can complement their new VP well. He's not looking for a yes-man like some might. He wants somebody with different opinions but sees the game from an intelligent and well-prepared point of view.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the team has three candidates lined up already. Who are they and what could they bring to the table?
Chicago Bulls targeting diverse options with scouting roots
Marc Eversley
A man with deep roots out east. Eversley emerged onto the NBA scene as Assistant GM of the Toronto Raptors in 2010. He would stay in that position through 2013. During that time, the team drafted a few standout names like Jonas Valančiūnas and Ed Davis. He spent a couple of seasons in Washington before being scooped up by Philadelphia in 2016. With his help as Vice Presiden of Player Personnel, the 76ers drafted All-Star Ben Simmons.
Mark Hughes
Unlike Eversley, Hughes has a much deeper background on the pro personnel side of things. After starting out in the NBA as an assistant coach, he moved to scouting. Eventually, he worked his way up the ladder with the New York Knicks. In 2011 he became their director of pro player personnel. With his help, they acquire All-Stars Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire, and Tyson Chandler. This led to him gaining Assistant GM duties with the Clippers last season where he helped engineer the blockbuster moves for Paul George and Kawaii Leonard.
Matt Lloyd
This is a name that Bulls fans might cheer for the most. Lloyd was hired as a scout by the team in 2003. By 2007 he became their director of college scouting. Over the next five years, they would enjoy their greatest run of draft success with names like Joakim Noah, Derrick Rose, Taj Gibson, and Jimmy Butler all arriving. Lloyd went on to become the assistant GM in Orlando in 2012. They would end up drafting Victor Oladipo and Aaron Gordon. The man seems to bring strong scouting wherever he goes.
