Addison Russell is already out of today's game after getting drilled in the head with a fastball, but the Cubs shortstop depth after him is you and then your neighbor. The Cubs are already without Javier Báez, who has a hairline fracture in his thumb, so when Russell got clipped with a 94mph fastball on Sunday, the team obviously looked out for Russell but maybe also were crossing their fingers that he could stay in the game.
And Russell did.
After the delay he stole second base and then scored on a throwing error by Christian Yelich. The Cubs then followed with back-to-back doubles by Jon Lester and Ben Zobrist.
Seems like the beaning of Russell had a bigger impact on Brewers starter Adrian Houser, who retired the Cubs in order pretty easily through the first two innings before hitting Russell to begin the third inning.
UPDATE
After scoring in the third inning, Russell did not return in the bottom half and was replaced by Bote at shortstop. Ian Happ came in to take over at third for Bote, who was already filling in for Kris Bryant.
