Not only are the Chicago Cubs they're also interested in a pair of relievers from the AL East. According to Chicago baseball reporter Bruce Levine, the Cubs are working hard in the trade market to add a high-leverage bullpen arm with Seranthony Domínguez and Pete Fairbanks among the potential relievers being targeted.
Domínguez, 30, will be a free agent after the 2025 season, so he'll be a rental arm, while Fairbanks has a $7 million club option for 2026, which adds to his value.
Pete Fairbanks - Tampa Bay Rays
The 31-year-old had an insane strikeout rate in 2022 and 2023 with the Tampa Bay Rays at Fairbanks recorded a 39.1 K% in 69.1 innings during those two seasons. The right-hander is still having a good year in Tampa Bay, posting a 2.84 ERA 38 innings so far in 2025, but he's not as dominant as he once was.
Fairbanks used to average a 99mph fastball a few years ago, but that's gone down to 97mph since the start of 2024 and as the velocity has gone down so has his strikeout rate.
Pete Fairbanks K% - FB velocity
2022: 43.7 K% - 99.2mph
2023: 37.0 K% - 99.0mph
2024: 23.8 K% - 97.4mph
2025: 20.3 K% - 97.3mph
Still, the seven-year veteran is getting the job done. He's only allowed a 2.7 barrel % this season and has a 48.6 GB% that would fit in perfectly with Dansby Swanson and Nico Hoerner up the middle.
Fairbanks is 17-for-20 in save opportunities this season. He recorded 48 saves in the previous two seasons with the Rays. That $7 million club option for the 2026 season should net Tampa Bay a top-10 prospect, but should fall short of any of the Cubs' top-rated minor leaguers. Add in a few more names and the Rays could be willing to trade Fairbanks away now despite being in the Wild Card mix.
The right-handed reliever has a career 3.22 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 243 innings.
Seranthony Domínguez - Baltimore Orioles
The 30-year-old pitcher is set to become a free agent after this season, so it's easier to picture the last-place Baltimore Orioles trading Domínguez within the next week than Fairbanks. Domínguez has been pretty good this year, recording a 3.32 ERA in 40.2 innings. The right-hander has a 31.0 K%, which is his highest rate since 2021.
Domínguez is another hard-thrower, averaging 97.8mph, slightly up from his 2024 average velocity. He has walked more guys in 2025 compared to the rest of his career, averaging 5.31 BB/9.
Going back to his days with the Philadelphia Phillies, Domínguez has primarily worked as a set-up man, tallying 71 career holds, while filling in as the closer for brief periods of time. So far in 2025, Domínguez has a pair of saves to go along with 13 holds. Last summer the Orioles traded for Domínguez at the deadline and he finished the year with 10 saves in 11 opportunities with Baltimore.
Domínguez has a career 3.55 ERA in 284 innings of work. He's also been incredible in 17 postseason appearances, posting a 1.02 ERA in 17.2 playoff innings. The right-hander has really stepped it up in October, recording a 27/4 strikeout to walk ratio.
The price for Domínguez shouldn't be too high for the Cubs. He's a rental reliever and not necessarily a top-end arm in the bullpen market. You're probably looking at the Cubs needing to trade away a prospect in the 25-30 area of their farm rankings with another lottery ticket attached as well.
