Let's hope this rehab assignment goes better than Yu Darvish's with the South Bend Cubs.
Drew Smyly, who's been out of action for 14 months because of Tommy John surgery, will begin a rehab assignment at South Bend tonight. The lefty signed a two-year deal in the offseason and although there was no expectation that he'd contribute to the Cubs in 2018, Smyly could very well be on his way to doing exactly that.
He's been building back his strength during the summer, pitching bullpen sessions and in simulated games. Now, he'll get his first game action since 2016.
As a matter of fact, Smyly has already pitched his one inning and what an inning it was, as he struck out the side.
There's a chance Smyly could join the Cubs some time in September, when rosters expand, but since he's currently not on the 40-man roster the team would have to make a corresponding move to add him on.
Anyway, it's great news for Smyly and his comeback, and for the Cubs, who could possibly have great starting pitching depth at the start of next season.
So far, an awesome start for Smyly's return to the majors that could be in September.
