After David Bote was demoted for Steve Cishek's return from the injured list, the Cubs have been playing with a three-man bench. That short bench is getting tested against the Nationals on Saturday, as Anthony Rizzo left the game after the top of the fifth inning.
Rizzo has always had minor back issues and that's popped up again.
Backup catcher Jonathan Lucroy pinch-hit Rizzo in the bottom of the fifth inning and hit an RBI-double. Ian Happ pinch-hit in the fourth inning and was ejected after arguing a strike three call with the bases loaded.
So, the Cubs only have Addison Russell left on the bench for the rest of Saturday's game. Victor Caratini moved from catcher to first base, while Lucroy moved behind the plate.
Going forward, hopefully Rizzo's back tightness doesn't stick around.
