Carlos González made a great catch in his Cubs debut, hit a home run against the Cardinals and walked a few times, but it looks like his time with Chicago is done.
The veteran outfielder started 6-for-23 with the Cubs, but since then González went 1-for-17 and looked completely overmatched at the plate. Following Friday's loss to the Reds, González was seen with other players in the clubhouse, getting hugs and handshakes.
It seems González's time with the Cubs has come to an end.
Expect the roster move to be announced Saturday, when the Cubs will also know more about Cole Hamels.
The lefty only pitched one inning and after throwing a few warmup pitches before the second inning he walked off the mound and went directly into the clubhouse.
In 2017, Hamels also missed time because of a right oblique strain. However, he's using that experience this time around to not try and push things too fast.
In 2017, Hamels missed two months because of the injury.
Adbert Alzolay, welcome to the spotlight!
Also, Kyle Hendricks might be back in the rotation against the White Sox. He'll throw a bullpen session on Saturday. He threw one earlier this week and felt good. At least there's that good news.
After Friday's game Hamels spoke to reporters and maybe this is a silver lining? He doesn't think this oblique injury as bad as the on from 2017.
Via ESPN.
"I came back probably a week earlier than I should of," Hamels said of his 2017 injury. "I don't think it's going to be as bad but I know after experiencing it once, and seeing what type of results I was continuing to put up, that's not going to be any sort of good scenario to repeat that."
But the Cubs will have to wait to see the MRI results to find out the severity.
So, expect the Cubs to call up a couple pitchers on Saturday and after the weekend a position player should be added to replace one of those pitchers.
Hopefully it's Robel Garcia.
Mike Montgomery and Brad Brach each pitched 2.1 innings on Friday and that came after Tyler Chatwood pitched five innings in a start Thursday. So, that's why the Cubs are expected to call up two pitchers instead of just one. Need that extra fresh arm in the bullpen.
