As the Chicago Cubs prepared for a matchup with their cross-town counterparts yesterday morning, it seemed they may have had plans to add an extra storyline to the series. Following the major fire-sale on the Northside one week ago, the Cubs seem eager to get some of the young talents they returned to Wrigley Field as soon as possible. Outfielder Gregg Deichmann, part of the Andrew Chafin to Oakland trade, made his major league debut.
After being scratched from the Iowa Cubs lineup, the newcomer teased the move on his Instagram page last night. Yesterday it was confirmed he would be joining the big league club in place of Jason Heyward, who continues to add to a forgettable season even for his own standards with another trip to the IL. After being sent over in the Chafin deal, Deichmann, 26, appeared in 7 games for AAA Iowa. Before that, he had hit .300 with a .433 OBP in 60 games for AAA Las Vegas. Originally selected in the 2nd round of the 2017 draft out of LSU, the OF has played in 251 games across 5 seasons in the minors batting .247 with 30 home runs. In a series that certainly could add more salt to the fresh wounds of Cubs faithful, the prospect has an opportunity to provide a glimpse of what the future of baseball at the Friendly Confines may look like. Fellow newcomer Codi Heuer has already had a chance to play for the Cubs and is actually younger than Deichmann, but he will also have eyes on his play this weekend. In the Craig Kimbrel deal, the former White Sox reliever came over to the Northside along with second baseman Nick Madrigal and will likely be looking to get some revenge on his former team.
