Well, I mean this is what the Cubs wanted to see, but it's probably a quicker call up than what they expected. Unfortunately, the offense has hit rock bottom and with no answer at third base, Nick Madrigal has been called up from Triple-A.
Left-handed hitting utility man Miles Mastrobuoni has been optioned back down to the Iowa Cubs.
Since Madrigal was demoted to Triple-A a few weeks ago, he's been on fire at the plate. In 11 games with the Iowa Cubs, Madrigal went 20-for-41, a .488 batting average, with a home run, six doubles and three triples.
At this point, given Wisdom's god-awful past month, the Cubs should just play Madrigal as often as they can moving forward. Have to see one way or another if Madrigal is going to turn the corner or not at the major league level and the only way that's possible is if he's getting every-day at-bats. I was all in favor of Madrigal needing to be sent down in May because he was horrible to begin the season, but now? The Cubs are pretty much out of being in contention and there's no point in seeing Wisdom out there more days than not.
The Cubs should prioritize playing time for guys like Madrigal, Christopher Morel and Matt Mervis. Even they struggle, it's not the other guys who have been playing are doing anything at all at the plate. Evaluate these younger players for the next few months and then determine your next steps with or without them being part of your future.
That being said, Madrigal should never be leading off. Goddamnit, David Ross. Here's Friday night's lineup against the San Francisco Giants.
I get it, Nico Hoerner has been scuffling, he needs a day off, basically the entire lineup outside of Dansby Swanson and Mike Tauchman has been awful, but leading off for Madrigal? Whatever. Let's go Nick Madrigal. Please, do something.
