The Winter Meetings are about to start in a few days and the Cubs still haven't hired a new pitching coach after Jim Hickey resigned in November. The Cubs have seen several changes to Joe Maddon's staff since the end of the season and there's still a chance that they'll need a new bench coach too. Although, I think those chances are low.
Brandon Hyde was a hot name earlier in the offseason, interviewing with four different teams for their vacant managerial positions. Hyde, who's been with the Cubs since 2013, is now reportedly interviewing with the Orioles for their open manager position, which happens to be the last managerial spot available this offseason.
The Twins, Rangers, Angels and Blue Jays interviewed Hyde to be their new skipper and he was reportedly a finalist in Minnesota. However, Rocco Baldelli eventually got the job with the Twins. According to The Athletic, Mike Bell from the Diamondbacks and Pedro Grifol from the Royals are also interviewing with the Orioles. Hyde was Ricky Renteria's bench coach in 2014, and after Maddon was hired as the new Cubs manager Hyde moved over to be the first base coach. And after Davey Martinez became the Nationals manager following the 2017 season, Hyde went back in the dugout to be the bench coach for Maddon. Let's hope there are better opportunities that open up in the future for Hyde, because the Orioles? Woof!
