As expected the Cubs have DFA'd veteran outfielder Carlos González, while also placing left-handed starter Cole Hamels on the injured list after leaving Friday night's game with a left oblique strain.
The Cubs have called up right-handed relievers Rowan Wick and Dillon Maples.
Maples has been a strikeout machine in his last six games at Triple-A, recording 12 strikeouts. Wick has been consistent all season and has an ERA in the low 2s, pitching 28.1 innings with Iowa this year.
More important than the 12 strikeouts for Maples is that he's only walked two batters in those six games.
A for Hamels, the team still hasn't announced how serious the oblique strain is. He missed two months in 2017 with a right oblique strain, but on Friday night Hamels said he didn't feel this injury was a bad as the one from two years ago.
Unfortunately things just didn't get better for CarGo. After getting let go by Cleveland the Cubs picked him up and despite a decent first week, he quickly went back into a slump and ended up going 7-for-40 at the plate with the Cubs.
The Cubs should be calling up a position player after this weekend to take CarGo's bench spot. Two pitchers were called up for Saturday after the heavy workload the past few days from Cubs relievers.
