Cubs Finally DFA Outfielder and It's Not Jason Heyward

For some reason Jason Heyward is not only still with the Cubs, but he keeps being in the starting lineup. Prior to Friday's series opener against the Yankees, the Cubs announced several roster moves that included outfielder Clint Frazier being DFA'd. The other big move was right-handed starter Marcus Stroman going to the injured list because of shoulder soreness, while Wade Miley, Jonathan Villar and Yan Gomes are back from the injured list. Right-handed reliever Chris Martin is also back from the restricted list. To make room on the active roster, Alfonso Rivas and Michael Rucker have been optioned to Triple-A along with Frazier's DFA.

Seriously, what's the point of still having Heyward around? It's not like he's ever going to play at a level where another team is going to want to trade for him. At this point, he's sadly a sunk cost. It's dead money and the only thing the Cubs are doing is wasting a roster spot on him. Look, the chances that Frazier was going to be good and have some spectacular year were probably low, but the Cubs didn't even give him a real opportunity. He struggled the first couple weeks of the season and then missed a big chunk of the year after undergoing an appendectomy. Despite that, guess who still had better numbers between Frazier and Heyward? Clint Frazier. And I think the most frustrating part is that as a Cubs fan you have no idea what the point of any of this is. We know that the front office and ownership tried to sell us on the fact they they would be competitive, but that was never realistic. At best, and that means almost every single thing had to go right this year, the Cubs were going to be maybe a little better than a .500 team. Obviously everything hasn't gone right and as of right now the Cubs are 23-33, fourth in the NL Central. Fine, my expectations weren't high anyway. However, at least we thought a few guys were going to get a chance to prove themselves, the same way Frank Schwindel, Patrick Wisdom and Rafael Ortega did last year. That includes Frazier, who let me remind you is still only 27-years-old. And all Frazier got was 45 plate appearances. Cool. I mean, going beyond Heyward, Villar and Andrelton Simmons are two other guys who can be cut right now over Frazier and it would be the right move.
