Cubs Got The Luckiest Break Of The Year Against Nationals

The Cubs blew out the Nationals Friday night, scoring 11 runs against Washington's bullpen in a 14-6 victory. Yet, in the bottom of the seventh inning the Cubs were clinging to a 5-3 lead, when their bullpen almost blew it.

Brandon Kintzler gave up three hits and a run in the seventh and thanks to Albert Almora Jr. not throwing the ball back in to second base after a fly ball to center the Nationals had runners at second and third with two outs.

Then, Joe Maddon brought in Carl Edwards Jr. The last time he pitched Edwards gave up a game-tying homer to the Reds a few days ago.

Before the slender righty ever delivered a pitch the Nationals creeped one run closer, as Edwards was called for a balk.

Then, he threw a wild pitch and that's when the Cubs caught the luckiest break of the year.

For one, the ball bounced right back to Edwards and that made Brian Dozier freeze coming down the line from third base. Dozier was eventually called out for being out of the base line.

So, not only did the wild pitch bounce right back to Edwards, but if Dozier had just kept on running toward home he probably would have been safe, as Edwards momentarily juggled the ball.

That could have tied the game at five, but instead the Cubs got out of the inning still in front and then scored nine runs in the final two innings to blew out the Nationals.
