This has happened at least three times throughout the 2019 season. Addison Russell wasn't just playing poorly in June, but he also had a hand injury that pretty much kept him unavailable for a week. Yet, he was still taking a spot on the 25-man roster. Daniel Descalso had an ankle injury, which led to him falling off the face of the Earth and becoming unplayable as well. Now, as the Cubs try to chase down the Cardinals in the division, they're once again deciding to play at a disadvantage.
Anthony Rizzo hasn't played since the fifth inning of Saturday's game against the Nationals. Following Monday's day off it was clear that he had little to no chance of playing against the Mets, as his back tightness remained an issue.
Now, Rizzo isn't expected to play on Friday either, as Joe Maddon said he'd be surprised if the first baseman returned for the series opener against the Brewers at Wrigley Field.
Almost an entire week of playing with 24 guys and doing it willfully. C'mon Cubs, there is something called the 10-day injured list. how about using it.
And for the third straight day I'll bitch once again that even if the Cubs didn't want to put Rizzo on the injured list, then why not bring up another position player instead of James Norwood after Cole Hamels was put on the paternity list.
So far it hasn't cost them against the Mets, winning the first two games of the series, but it's difficult to see what the thought process is coming from the Cubs, who are once again playing a man down.
Last time I checked, these games mattered. With that being said, here's tonight's lineup against Jacob DeGrom.
Big time sense of urgency...
