The Cubs announced their 2019 Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year on Monday and there's a lot to like from both award winners.
Brennen Davis, 19, was drafted in the second round out of high school in 2018, and in his first full season of pro ball he recorded a slash line of .305/.381/.525, with eight home runs in 50 games for the South Bend Cubs. If it weren't for a couple wrist injuries Davis would have had an even bigger year, but he did return in time to be with South Bend at the end of the season, winning this year's Midwest League Championship.
With a new swing and immediate success, Davis is seen as the Cubs top prospect right now in some circles. The outfielder has a chance to be a top-100 prospect as soon as 2020.
Meanwhile, right-handed pitcher Cory Abbott beat out some tough competition for Pitcher of the Year, but he earned it. The 23-year-old finished his first season at Double-A by not allowing more than three hits in his final 11 STARTS!
Abbott, who was also drafted in the second round (2017) had a 3.01 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 26 starts this season. He struck out 166 batters and walked 52 in 146.2 innings.
