Yu Darvish made his spring training debut on Tuesday against the Diamondbacks and after throwing 36 pitches his day was done. He walked four, gave up no hits and didn't strike anyone out, but his fastball topped out at 96mph and after the 1.1 innings he said there was no pain in his throwing arm.
Great. That's really the most important thing for Darvish in spring training. Stay healthy and work out the kinks. But Darvish also had one more thing to say.
Darvish is making a bigger effort this year to speak English, to not only communicate better with his teammates, but with the media and fans as well. Turns out Darvish is paying close attention to how most Cubs fans are feeling about the team's lack of activity this offseason in free agency. You know, specifically not going after Bryce Harper.
Well, Darvish had a little joke about the Cubs not having an interpreter anymore because it's too expensive.
Last week, Tom Ricketts addressed the media and said this about not going after more free agents.
And before you start bringing up Darvish's contract, Theo Epstein made it clear last year after signing him that it wouldn't prevent the team from pursuing other top free agents in the future.
Something changed this winter and that's coming from Tom Ricketts.
