This most likely explains why Joe Maddon used Kyle Ryan to get the final seven outs of Thursday's blowout win. Ryan's been outstanding out of the Cubs bullpen since May, but he'll be away from the team for at least three days starting on Friday.
The Cubs placed the lefty on the bereavement list prior to tonight's game against the Reds and have called up Alec Mills to take his spot in the bullpen.
Since May 25, Ryan has recorded a 1.55 ERA in 29 innings, striking out 27 and walking nine in 31 appearances. So, the Cubs will miss him and hopefully it won't be more than the next three games against the Reds.
The Cubs are currently without Craig Kimbrel and Brandon Kintzler as well. Both are on the 10-day injured list.
Mills made two spot starts with the Cubs earlier this season, tossing 10.1 innings combined against the Reds and Giants, allowing a total of five runs.
