On Thursday night, super utility man Derek Dietrich announced via Instagram that he signed a deal with the Cubs, but he wasn't the only free agent addition made by the team on the eve of Opening Day.
The Cubs have also signed outfielder Ryan LaMarre to a minor league contract. LaMarre and Dietrich will report to South Bend along with left-handed pitching prospect Burl Carraway, who was drafted in the second round back in June.
You can read more on Dietrich here and some on Carraway here.
As for LaMarre, he's 31-years-old and played with the Twins in 2019. He can roam all three outfield positions, but during his limited time in the majors the right-handed hitter hasn't had much success.
LaMarre made his MLB debut with the Reds in 2015, and since then he's also played for the Red Sox, A's, White Sox and Twins. He has a career .623 OPS in 225 at-bats, but he has been better the last two seasons. From 2018-19, the righty slashed .271/.320/.394, which included an .809 OPS in 33 games with the White Sox in 2018.
Just a depth guy and you can essentially view this signing as a replacement for Mark Zagunis on the South Bend roster this summer. On Thursday, Zagunis opted out of the season and was put on the restricted list.
Oh and quickly back to Derek Dietrich...
