The Cubs offense has been very bad. Literally the worst for more than half the season. But hey, at least we have some good prospects. Yay.
The 2023 Cubs are pretty close to dead and as much as you may not care about prospects, there are a few guys that are worth knowing about because they can very much be up in the majors in the next year or so. Well, the majority of these guys.
Pete Crow-Armstrong
The Cubs number one prospect did hit his first real slump down at Double-A, but for the past month Pete Crow-Armstrong has been as good as advertised.
On Thursday night, PCA went 2-for-4 at the plate, stole a base and scored a run. The 21-year-old center fielder has recorded at least one hit in five games in a row and in 9 of his last 10 games.
Since May 11, through Thursday's game, Crow-Armstrong has posted a 151 wRC+ in 89 plate appearances.

You'd want to see the strikeouts come down, but it's a great sign to see PCA improving his plate discipline, nearly tripling his BB% since the first month of the season. Also, the power numbers are fantastic for a guy who also has great speed and top tier defense at a premium position.
Yonathan Perlaza
The switch-hitting outfielder/DH has reached base in 19 straight games and it's not like Yonathan Perlaza is just slapping singles around the field down at Triple-A. The 24-year-old has been scotching hot with the Iowa Cubs and at this point he might be close to getting a shot in the majors.

12.5 BB%, 19.3 K%
3 HR, 16 RBI, 19 R, 2 SB, 14 Doubles, 11 BB
Perlaza has posted a 175 wRC+ in his last 88 plate appearances with a 1.106 OPS. Those numbers could be even better because he's had more than a handful of hard-hit balls go high off outfield walls in Triple-A.
The other great thing about Perlaza's offensive output is that as a switch-hitter he's been great from both sides of the plate.

vs. LHP: .310/.383/.548 (42 At-Bats)
Haydn McGeary
The Cubs drafted Haydn McGeary last year and he's been a beast in the minors after he was destroying baseballs in D2 during his college career. The 23-year-old was promoted to Double-A this season after an amazing start to the year in A-Ball with the South Bend Cubs.
At first, the 6-foot-4 first baseman and DH struggled at the new level, as McGeary only slashed .237/.313/.339, with one home run in his first 16 games with the Tennessee Smokies at Double-A. However, he's made the necessary adjustments against tougher competition and since May 20, the right-handed slugger has gotten back to his monster numbers.

On Thursday night, McGeary recorded his fifth multi-hit game in his last seven games, including his second straight game with a home run.
BJ Murray Jr.
Switch-hitting infielder BJ Murray Jr. was bad through his first 11 games at Double-A to begin the 2023 season. He went 3-for-29, but since April 18, Murray has been the best hitting prospect in the Cubs minor league system. Murray has certainly had the longest period of success at the plate so far in 2023.

Murray had his third straight multi-hit game this week on Thursday night, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a HBP as well. He's now reached base in 14 consecutive games and in 42 of his last 43 games.
Also, his numbers are fairly consistent from both sides of the plate as a switch-hitter.

Kevin Alcántara
Outfield prospect Kevin Alcántara entered the 2023 season with a lot of hype surrounding him. The 20-year-old had a tough assignment, beginning the year with the South Bend Cubs in a less than hitter-friendly environment. The tall, right-handed hitter struggled into May, but as the weather has warmed up so has Alcántara.

The right-handed hitting outfielder has reached safely in 10 straight games and he's had at least one hit in 9 of his last 10 games. On Thursday, Alcántara recorded three hits for the third time in his last five games. So far in June, Alcántara is 11-for-22 in five games.
