Cubs Trade Infielder To Phillies

The Chicago Cubs have made a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies.

On Thursday, the Cubs sent left-handed hitting infielder Esteban Quiroz to the Phillies in exchange for some cash.

The 31-year-old made up to the majors for the first time in his pro career with the Cubs in 2022. He played in 14 games and went 11-for-40 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in three runs in the final few weeks of the season. Last year, Quiroz only played in 40 games at Triple-A after going to the injured list in May and not returning until August.

So, this closes the book on the trade that got Quiroz to the Cubs. He was acquired almost a year ago today on March 25, 2022, when the Cubs dealt right-handed hitter Harold Ramirez to the Tampa Bay Rays.

While Quiroz spent most of the 2022 season down with the Iowa Cubs at Triple-A, Ramirez went on to slash .300/.343/.404, with six home runs in 120 games for the Rays. Certainly not the best move from Jed Hoyer and the front office in the past year.

Quiroz, who is from Ciudad Obregon, Mexico, began his playing career in his home country from 2011-17, before signing with the Boston Red Sox. He went on to play in the minors for the San Diego Padres, before getting to the Rays and eventually the Cubs. Now, he'll join the Phillies to give them depth at the Triple-A level.
