The Cubs entered their 10-game road trip on Thursday with a 21-33 record away from Wrigley Field. They haven't won a road series since the middle of May. On the flip side, following a 5-1 home stand the Cubs improved to 41-19 at home. Sooooo, gotta wear the home jerseys on the road, right?
Not quite, but the Cubs are trying a new good luck charm, hanging up their home jerseys in their locker rooms in Cincinnati starting on Thursday.
I don't think there's a group of people more superstitious than baseball players, so I'm surprised it took until now for the Cubs to try something like this.
And hey, so far so good!
Cole Hamels only lasted three innings, but the Cubs offense scored 12 runs, led by Nick Castellanos, Ian Happ and Jonathan Lucroy, who combined to drive in eight runs in the 12-5 win.
Tyler Chatwood pitched three scoreless innings, while Duane Underwood Jr. and Kyle Ryan got the final nine outs against the Reds.
During the last nine-game road trip, which saw the Cubs go 3-6, the offense scored a total of 31 runs, 11 coming in one game against the Brewers. So, let's hope the Cubs can build off their 12-run, 19-hit outburst from Thursday night with a little help from their new good luck charm.
Yu Darvish, who has a 2.78 ERA over his last six starts, will square off against Trevor Bauer on Friday night.
