There's nothing more annoying than when a reliever comes in with the lead and then immediately starts walking guys. We saw that way too often in 2019 with the Cubs and that's why free agent reliever Chris Martin was a guy I wanted them to sign this offseason.
In 55.1 innings with the Rangers and Braves last season, Martin struck out 65 batters and only walked five! After Atlanta traded for him, Martin made 20 appearances for the Braves and walked just one batter in 17.2 innings. He's also a reliever who throws hard, averaging 96.2 mph on his fastball in 2019.
And despite being 33-years-old, Martin only has 133.2 MLB innings under his belt. Lots to like about him as he was one of the top relievers in free agency and obviously the Braves were impressed.
Atlanta announced on Tuesday that they're bringing him back on a two-year contract worth $14 million.
Last week the Braves signed left-hander Will Smith, the No. 1 free agent reliever this winter, to a three-year, $40 million deal.
