Mark Loretta out, Andy Green in. After Jon Heyman reported late on Friday that Loretta would not return to the Cubs in 2020, ESPN's Jesse Rogers reported that former Padres manager Andy Green will be the new Cubs bench coach.
Green was the manager in San Diego from 2016-19. He was fired this past September despite being under contract through 2021.
Before Green became a first-time manager with the Padres he was the Diamondbacks third base coach in 2015. Prior to reaching the major league coaching staff, Green spent three years managing in the minors and won back-to-back manager of the year awards at Double-A.
As a player, Green was drafted by the Diamondbacks in 2000 and after three years in the minors he spent part of three seasons on their MLB roster. He spent 2007 in Japan, but returned to the United States the year after. Green played in the minors for the Reds organization and then joined the Mets, making his final MLB stint with New York in 2009.
Overall, Green played in 140 MLB games and another 901 minor league games during his 11-year career.
