The Cubs farm system ranks at the bottom of the league, but they have several prospects to be excited about and that's not even including Miguel Amaya, Nico Hoerner and Brennen Davis. For the past couple months, four pitching prospects have been putting up wild numbers and they were all great on Tuesday.
Let's begin in Triple-A and work down in the system.
Right-hander Adbert Alzolay has dealt with several injures since last year, but he's coming back strong following a biceps issue that kept him out of action for two weeks. He has had some control problems, but that wasn't the case Tuesday afternoon, when he struck out seven and walked none in four innings.
There's no doubt Alzolay has a MLB-ready arm, but it's just a matter of durability for the right-hander.
Now, let's talk about two lefties in Brailyn Marquez and Jack Patterson.
While Marquez has the higher ceiling of the two, Patterson has made the biggest jump in 2019, beginning the season as a reliever in A-Ball to dominating at Double-A as a starter. All that after being a 32nd round pick in last year's draft.
But let's not forget about Marquez, who's throwing in the triple digits and just had back-to-back no-hit starts.
Last but certainly not least, there was 19-year-old Kohl Franklin, who has a 1.38 ERA in 32.2 innings in A-Ball one year after getting drafted in the sixth round out of high school.
The Cubs are taking it slow with Franklin this season, limiting him to no more than five innings in each of his eight starts. Nevertheless, the numbers and the stuff look great.
Michael Ernst, who does a great job covering Cubs prospects over at Cubs Den, thinks Franklin has the highest ceiling in the system.
Franklin has 41 strikeouts to just 12 walks in 32.2 innings so far in 2019.
Oh and by the way, Jose Quintana also set a new career high with 14 strikeouts on Tuesday.
There's plenty to be excited about down in the minors if you're a Cubs fan.
