Former Cubs fan favorite Carlos Zambrano shared some interesting news yesterday before his former team defeated the Miami Marlins 7-2.
He's ready to pitch again.
The 37-year-old shared an email with Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times that was from the independent Chicago Dogs inviting Zambrano to the team. Big Z will take his physical for the Dogs on May 2 so if you're thinking this is a publicity stunt, think again.
Zambrano hasn't pitched in the United States since 2013 and had a less than stellar attempted comeback in the Mexican league last year. He shared that he'll be attempting to make it as a reliever and after watching the month of April with some of the relievers the Cubs are rolling out there day in and day out, why the hell not?
It's also a LONG ways down the road but if this comeback was successful and Zambrano did make it back to the Cubs, can you imagine the electricity if he was throwing to his fellow Venezuelan, Willson Contreras?
Inject that directly into my veins.
Zambrano explained his comeback is due to a message from God he received while attending a Christian youth conference is his home country of Venezuela.
‘‘I went to that conference, and something happened to me and changed my life,’’ he said. ‘‘I had an encounter with God. I used to believe in God. And now I’m committed.’’
Big Z was a fan favorite during his time in Chicago from 2001-2011 which was highlighted by a variety of unique events: a no-hitter, retiring mid-game, beating up Michael Barret, and murdering a Gatorade cooler.
You can call Carlos Zambrano a lot of things, but boring isn't one of them. I've never attended a Chicago Dogs game but if this plan really comes into play, I'll be the biggest Dogs fan there is.
And the tickets will be cheap.
