Closer Craig Kimbrel is eligible to come off the injured list today, but despite not quite being ready to return to the bullpen the latest update on his recovery is still good news for the Cubs.
Kimbrel was a surprise addition to the injured list in early August with right knee inflammation. He threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and will throw another one Thursday.
If everything goes well on Thursday, then Kimbrel should be back against the Pirates.
It also sounds like Brandon Kintzler will be back this weekend after missing the minimum 10 days on the injured list. He was sidelined with a right pec strain.
Via the Chicago Sun-Times.
Kintzler threw from a mound for the second time Tuesday since going on the 10-day injured list and expects to return when eligible on Friday in Pittsburgh.
Kintzler has been the best Cubs reliever throughout the entire 2019 season, so his return will certainly give the bullpen a boost.
There's also good news on Steve Cishek. The righty struggled prior to landing on the injured list with a hip issue and that was concerning because he had hip surgery a few years ago.
However, he threw on Wednesday and felt good. Cishek will also pitch a bullpen session on Thursday.
Cubs catcher Willson Contreras is also working back from his hamstring strain that's expected to keep him out until the first week of September at the earliest.
There's also something new to keep an eye on, as Jason Heyward was scratched from Wednesday's lineup because of knee inflammation. The outfielder says this won't require a stint on the injured list.
So, that's something else to watch for.
