I just wrote about it on Friday and Christopher Morel keeps making David Ross, well his comments, look very stupid.
The Chicago Cubs got their ass kicked this weekend, losing to the Minnesota Twins 11-1 on Saturday and then 16-3 on Sunday. Hayden Wesneski had his first awful start since his short outing against the Seattle Mariners back in April, while Marcus Stroman had the worst timing for his first bad start of the season. We knew this series in Minnesota wasn't going to be easy because the Twins' starting rotation has been great so far in 2023 and when your starters aren't on, then the last two days happen.
However, there was one good thing from the Cubs on Mother's Day and that was Morel breaking his two-day old record for longest home run hit by a Cubs player this season.
On Friday night, Morel hit a 429-foot rocket to right-center field. That was a good indicator of just how special Morel's power is because you don't see many hitters being able to go out that part of the ballpark and especially not right-handed hitters.
On Sunday, Morel once again did what no other Cubs player has come close to this year. The 23-year-old now has the second longest and the longest home run on the team in 2023. He's played in five games. The 461-foot bomb was Morel's third home run since he was called up from Triple-A a week ago.
And again, a reminder that Ross said he did not see a clear path for Morel to get regular playing time when Morel was added to the roster last week.
How do you see your struggling offense and say this out loud, especially when the designated hitter position does in fact exist in the National League and has for a few years. C'mon, dude.
Morel is 8-for-21 in five games, adding four extra-base hits, (3 home runs, 1 double), getting at least one hit in all five games that he's played in. It is sad to think that the main reason Morel has been starting, if you take Ross' comment into account, is only because starting second baseman Nico Hoerner was placed on the 10-day injured list with a mild hamstring strain heading into the Minnesota series on Friday. Hoerner first got hurt last Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals.
There is just no reason that Morel can't be in the lineup on almost daily basis. Again, you can find games where Ian Happ can sit against a left-handed starting pitcher, or maybe like Sunday, Cody Bellinger gets a day off after going through a slump. The same thing with Seiya Suzuki. You can mix in Morel at third base as well, especially ahead of Nick Madrigal, who has been a bad hitter for a while now.
Morel is hot right now, don't waste it and hopefully Ross comes around to that thinking once Hoerner returns from the injured list.
