After one of the most frustrating losses of the year on Monday night, the Cubs were almost on their way to an even more agonizing defeat against the Phillies. They led 1-0 until the bullpen gave up two runs in the seventh inning and the offense once again couldn't come through with runners in scoring position.
Still down 2-1 in the ninth, Kris Bryant started the rally with a walk, Anthony Rizzo doubled and after a good battle by Willson Contreras that ended up in a pop fly to shallow right field the Phillies intentionally walked Jason Heyward to load the bases with one out.
Albert Almora Jr. hit a slow chopper between the mound and first base that allowed Bryant to score the game-tying run. Then, with the bases loaded Javier Báez came in to pinch-hit and even with a sore heel he delivered a walk-off single on the first pitch he saw.
Báez was out of the Cubs lineup for the second straight game after leaving in the sixth inning of Sunday's series finale against the Nationals.
Joe Maddon hopes Báez can return in the next couple days, as the shortstop continues to heal from his sore heel.
