Theo Epstein made it official on Sunday, announcing that Joe Maddon would not return as Cubs manager in 2020. The very next day the Angels fired Brad Ausmus after he managed them for just one season.
That was after Ausmus agreed to a three-year contract. Is he just Rick Renteria 2.0?
Well, Ken Rosenthal was the first to report a week ago that the Angels were considering firing Ausmus to pursue Joe Maddon. Step one is complete and the Maddon to Angels speculation is in full force.
Via ESPN.
Angels owner Arte Moreno holds Maddon in high regard, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney. And ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that a reunion is likely.
Maddon was a coach for the Angels from 1993-2005 before going to Tampa Bay and then Chicago. But does Maddon want to "go back home."
There's definitely interest in the Angels job from Maddon.
Maddon is interested in the Angels’ position, according to a person who has spoken with him, but the Angels have not been in contact with him. Technically, Maddon remains under contract through the end of October, so the Cubs would have to grant him permission to engage with other teams regarding potential jobs.
Kind of just seems a matter of when not if Joe Maddon will be hired as the next Angels manager.
