UPDATE
Yeah, this Mets thing about Carlos Correa was bullshit. He's going to the Giants.
Here's what I originally wrote before the news broke.
________________________________________________________________________________________
Are the New York Mets actually interested in signing Carlos Correa? Is Scott Boras trying to drive up offers for the top free agent left this offseason? Are the Mets trying to drive up the price for Correa for some reason?
Well, according to Ken Rosenthal, the Mets are indeed interested in Correa and there's a second report claiming that current shortstop Francisco Lindor has asked the team to pursue him.
Via The Athletic.
Cohen’s Mets are showing interest in Correa, according to sources familiar with the team’s thinking. Correa, 28, likely would play third base for the Mets, alongside his fellow native of Puerto Rico, shortstop Francisco Lindor.
“I’d say there’s some smoke,” one Mets person said. “I’m not sure how big the fire is, though.”
So, kind of hedging with the second quote there, leaving it up interpretation on how serious the Mets are for Correa. However, there is also the following that came out Tuesday night.
Apparently it's Lindor who is asking the Mets to go after Correa.
I mean, at this point would it be surprising if the Mets did end up signing Correa? Say what you want about Steve Cohen, but that guy is putting his money where his mouth is. Right now, with all their free agent signings so far this offseason, the Mets would have a payroll of about $421 million, including penalties for going over the luxury tax. Oh and by the way, the Mets are also interested in bringing back Michael Conforto and are exploring JD Martinez's market, too, according to The Athletic.
Anyway, for the Cubs, here's what should really piss you off. They aren't even mentioned in this latest article from The Athletic.
The Mets would not be alone in any pursuit of Correa. The Minnesota Twins view him as their primary target, and the San Francisco Giants also are believed to be in the mix. After missing out on Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, the Giants face significant pressure to find a franchise pillar with which to build around.
Cool.
What makes even worse that this new report about the Mets being interested in Correa and the Cubs not even given the time of day as a team pursuing him, as that according to The Athletic, Correa could be signed at what seems like a pretty reasonable deal compared to the other two massive contracts shortstops have signed this offsesson.
Correa, the top remaining free agent, likely would cost another $30 million-plus per season, or perhaps less on an average annual basis if he signs a deal of more than 10 years — a possibility, according to sources.
C'mon Jed. Get off your ass and offer 10 years for $300 million. Or 12 years for less than $30 million a season. or you know, sit around and wait to see another team swoop in and sign Correa instead.
Here's another Correa and Mets rumor going around out of New York.
Hmmm, maybe talking about the concept of time?
This has been a frustrating couple of days as a Cubs fan. But this is the game when it comes down to premier free agents and who knows how much Boras is involved in these recent leaks, but there is no doubt in my mind that he's trying to drive up the price for Correa. Using the Mets, who have spent like no other team in MLB history, sure is a good tactic.
But hey, at least Jim Bowden said the Cubs are one of the teams with the inside track for Correa. That's something, right?
RIGHT?
