The Mets certainly didn't help out Noah Syndergaard, committing an error in the first inning and then allowing a Kris Bryant pop up to drop between two defenders in the second. Yet, the Cubs were all over Syndergaard on Wednesday night, when he pitched the worst start of his career.
After the first-inning error allowed Nick Castellanos to score, Kyle Schwarber doubled to right field making it 2-0. Addison Russell then delivered a two-run single.
Then Ian Happ snapped out of his slump, with a two-run opposite-field home run.
After seven batters the Cubs were up 6-0, but Syndergaard still had to work hard to not allow more damage in the first. Victor Caratini hit a hard single to right and moved to second on a sac-bunt by Kyle Hendricks. Syndergaard threw a wild pitch and then walked Jason Heyward before finally ending the first by striking out Castellanos.
But then the second inning arrived and things didn't get better for Thor.
And then Castellanos, who got hit in the first inning, got his payback in the third.
After three innings the Mets finally said enough was enough.
Syndergaard entered Wednesday with a 1.82 ERA in eight starts since the All-Star break.
Oh baseball, it's so silly. The Cubs get swept at home by the Nationals, look inept on offense and then go on the road where they have been awful against the hottest team in the league and now they're on the verge of a series win against the Mets.
