What a great piece of news to wake up to after such a shitty weekend against the Brewers. The Cubs are calling up their number one prospect Nico Hoerner.
Javier Baez is out with a fractured thumb and Addison Russell was beaned on the head during Sunday's game, eventually leaving after the top of the third inning. The depth at shortstop for the Cubs before this call up was Daniel Descalso, Ben Zobrist and David Bote.
So yeah, Hoerner, who was drafted in the first round in 2018, impressed everyone in the Arizona Fall League, and then got off to a great start in Double-A this season is about to join a team playing for its postseason life. Welcome to the big leagues.
Hoerner suffered a wrist fracture early this year that set him back offensively, but he turned it around with Tennessee, slashing .333/.391/.390, in August. He began the year with a .891 OPS in April before going down and missing two months with the wrist injury.
Hoerner has also started games at second base and center field in Double-A this season.
