The Cubs and Padres traded the lead during Friday's series opener at Wrigley Field, but after San Diego tied the game for the second time their crappy defense led to a 6-5 win for the Cubs.
Anthony Rizzo leadoff the eighth with a single to center, but the momentum seemed to be stopped as Addison Russell hit a ground ball to Fernando Tatis Jr. It looked like a double play, but Tatis Jr's throw went past the second baseman allowing Rizzo to go to third base, while Russell went to second on the error.
Jason Heyward was intentionally walked, bringing up David Bote to the plate. Bote's been terrible since the middle of June, posting a sub .500 OPS during the last month. He didn't get a big hit, but thanks to the second error of the inning by the Padres, the Cubs took the lead.
For some reason San Diego's catcher threw to first and Eric Hosmer made it worse by dropping the ball. Russell scored and that was the difference on Friday afternoon.
Craig Kimbrel came on to close things out and despite a one-out walk he was nasty, striking out the side to get the save.
The Cubs improve to 6-1 since the All-Star break.
