The Cubs are reportedly signing right-handed reliever Jeremy Jeffress to a one-year contract according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.
The 32-year-old pitcher has a 3.16 ERA in 392 career appearances.
And you guessed it, Jeffress is another bounce back candidate the Cubs are rolling the dice on. In 2019 with the Brewers, Jeffress posted a 5.02 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 52 innings. Yet, in 2018, he was an All-Star for Milwaukee, making 73 appearances and recording a 1.29 ERA and 0.99 WHIP over 76.2 innings.
Jeffress was eventually released by the Brewers last September after his poor showing and injuries certainly played a part in his struggles. Jeffress battled shoulder and hip injuries and that might explain why his average fastball velocity went down to 94.4 mph in 2019. Since making his MLB debut in 2010, Jeffress' average fastball velocity had been between 95-97 mph prior to last season.
Hey, if he can get back to his usual velocity, then I actually like this signing. We'll see.
