The Giants are reportedly interested in Cubs first base coach Will Venable for their open manager position.
Bruce Bochy, who retired after the 2019 season, was as old school as it gets, but it appears as though the Giants are going in the opposite direction. So far San Francisco seems to be interested in a group of young candidates for the vacant manager position which includes Venable.
Per league sources, the Giants also have interest in Will Venable, who currently is the first base coach for the Chicago Cubs. Venable, 36, spent eight years as a Padres outfielder and finished his career with the Dodgers in 2016, when Zaidi was the general manager there.
The Cubs brought Venable into their front office in 2017 as an assistant and he was then moved to Joe Maddon's coaching staff in 2018. Venable has already interviewed for the Cubs open manager spot.
Meanwhile the Giants have interviewed several candidates in the past week: Hensley Meulens, Ron Wotus, Mark Kotsay and Pedro Grifol. Gabe Kapler will also meet with the Giants, according to Jon Heyman.
Cubs coaches have been poached in the last few years, as Dave Martinez became the Nationals manager after 2017 and last year Brandon Hyde was hired as the Orioles manager.
