REPORT: Joe Girardi Officially A Candidate, Will Interview With Cubs

Since we learned that Joe Maddon wasn't going to return to manage the Cubs in 2020 some fans immediately pointed to Joe Girardi as an option. Before Friday, there were only three known names that the Cubs said they were interviewing, Mark Loretta, David Ross and Will Venable.

There's definitely been a narrative driving Girardi into the mix, but again there weren't any concrete reports that the Cubs were considering him. Girardi went on 670 The Score on Wednesday and basically lobbied to be a candidate to replace Maddon.

I poked fun at some Cubs fans who commenting throughout the week as if it was a certainty that Girardi would be a candidate.

Well, now you can all laugh at me because The Athletic's Patrick Mooney is reporting that Girardi will indeed be interviewed by the Cubs next week along with Ross and Venable. Loretta was already interviewed on Thursday.

But again, I still don't think Girardi is a good fit.

So, we'll see what happens after next week. There's at least one more candidate Theo Epstein brought up on Monday, although he didn't name him specifically, it's a coach on a current playoff team.

Girardi has also been rumored to be interested in the Mets job.
