Joe Maddon has reportedly agreed to a three-year deal to become new Angels manager. After earning $28 million over five seasons with the Cubs, Maddon is taking a slight pay cut to head out West.
Jon Heyman was the first to report that a deal was close.
ESPN's Jesse Rogers first reported the contract range.
According to Bob Nightengale, former Yankees, Diamondbacks, Rangers and Orioles manager Buck Showalter finished runner-up to Maddon for the Angels job.
So, Maddon goes back to Anaheim, where his baseball career began.
After attempting to make it as a catcher with the Angels in the 70s, Maddon became a scout and then a coach, eventually managing in the minors for the Angels organization. From 1987-1993, Maddon was a roving hitting instructor and he was then promoted to the Angels MLB coaching staff.
From 1994-2005, Maddon was a first base coach, bench coach and interim manager three different times. He won a World Series as the Angels bench coach in 2002. In all, Maddon spent 31 years in the Angels organization. Now he's back to where it all began.
And the Angels have officially announced the hiring of Maddon.
There are now seven vacant manager positions left after Maddon's hiring.
