The San Diego Padres are moving Wil Myers back to the outfield in 2019, and that means they're looking for a third baseman. Myers, who began his career in the outfield before he was moved to first base a few years ago, ended the 2018 season playing third base. That experiment is over and according to a report from San Diego the Padres have had interest in trading for Cubs infielder David Bote.

The Padres’ preference would be a top young player to grow with the young players they already have. Among the options they have explored are deals for the Cubs’ David Bote, the Yankees’ Miguel Andujar and Reds prospect Nick Senzel. “Were definitely looking at the possibility of an upgrade from outside,” Preller said. “If it doesn’t happen, we’re looking at possibilities from within.”If the Cubs can package Bote along with one of their smaller, but bad money players like Brandon Kintzler or Brian Duensing, then sure, why not, make a deal. Of course, I'd also want the Cubs to get a decent reliever in return. Just anyone better than Duensing. And I know we all love David Bote, but we definitely overrated him in 2018, including myself, as I compared him to a future Ben Zobrist a few times. Bote really did fizzle out at the end. That being said, he can play great defense at third base and he played second with the Cubs too and could possible be OK at shortstop, but with the addition of Daniel Descalso, Bote might not even have a spot on the Cubs' 25-man roster. That doesn't mean they should be trying to get rid of him, but if a team is interested they have to listen, especially if a team like the Padres is willing to part with a solid reliever in return. At this point, though, it doesn't seem likely the Cubs would move Bote, as he can still be a valuable player during the season for depth purposes on the MLB roster. And hey, he does have some power.
