Well, if you wanted the Cubs to sign Jason Kipnis, then the latest round of rumors will make you happy. A week ago MLB.com's Jordan Bastian, who covers the Cubs, said the team had been in contact with the free agent second baseman.
On Tuesday, Carl from Barstool Chicago tweeted out that Kipnis will indeed sign with the Cubs.
The only other team directly linked to Kipnis in February has been the A's. Oakland has apparently been in talks with the second baseman as well.
But the rumors continue to point that Kipnis will be in Cubs camp for at least spring training.
I said it when the interest was first reported that I don't like the move at all and I still don't. If they're going to sign another second baseman give me Brock Holt or even Scooter Gennett. But Kipnis? The numbers have been bad for three straight seasons.
He's still a below average hitter against right-handed pitching, but if Kipnis is getting signed by the Cubs, then that could at least mean no Daniel Descalso? Yay.
This could also point to the Cubs most likely leaning toward beginning the year with Nico Hoerner at Triple-A. You'd think that a David Bote/Jason Kipnis at second base could be the platoon to start the season. I'd prefer just giving Hoerner a shot right out of the gate, but I do understand if the Cubs believe he needs more seasoning down in the minors.
However, I just don't think Kipnis is the answer, but hopefully it does end up working out. We'll see.
During Tuesday's press conference down in Arizona, Theo Epstein said the team will make a few minor moves, but obviously didn't go into specifics.
So yeah, if it's a minor league deal, sure.
