The Cubs had a chance to avoid Game 163, but they lost on Saturday 2-1 to the Cardinals. Then, in their tie-breaker against the Brewers to avoid the Wild Card Game. the Cubs scored one run in a 3-1 loss on Monday. On Tuesday night, with a chance to still advance to the NLDS the Cubs put up one fucking run in 13 innings, losing to the Rockies 2-1.
So, in their final 22 innings, the two biggest games of the year, the Cubs offense scored two fucking runs.
I didn't think it was a big deal that Chili Davis was coming in as the new hitting coach. His critics pointed to the Red Sox offense that got worse in 2017 and all of sudden going bonkers again in 2018. Of course losing David Ortiz in 2017 and then adding JD Martinez in 2018 will make those numbers look worse and better overall for a team. Anyway, I didn't want to buy in to the talk that Davis was the key to those failure.
Well, look at the seasons from Willson Contreras, Albert Almora Jr., Ian Happ and Addison Russell before his injury. All those guys got worse. The overall power on the Cubs went way down.
Someone has to be the scapegoat and I bet it's going to be Chili Davis.
Simply unacceptable. And it's obviously not all on him because that'd be dumb to think. These hitters, I don't know, maybe it was the 42 games in 43 days to end the year. That probably played a factor into their disappointing flame out, but holy shit was it bad. Look at all the low-scoring games in September. Just awful.
Blame Joe Maddon all you want. Not sure what he's supposed to do or go to when the entire offense goes to shit all at once.
