Bryce Harper isn't going to sign with the Cubs.
We all know MLB insider Jon Heyman definitely has solid sources, but any fan who follows the every-day cycle of rumors and reports also knows that Heyman is pretty much a mouthpiece for super agent Scott Boras. Whatever Boras wants out in the public, Heyman will deliver it to the masses.
The latest in the Harper pursuit is the Dodgers making a surprise visit to Las Vegas this weekend to meet with the 26-year-old free agent. The Phillies owner also flew to Las Vegas, but no one has a deal yet.
Although the Dodgers appear to be back in the mix, there aren't any indications that they'll offer Harper a long-term deal, something that's been made very clear that he wants. The Giants also seem to be in the picture, but like the Dodgers, also aren't looking at a long deal.
So, that really only leaves the Phillies.
Heyman went on Philly sports radio on Monday and he dropped the Cubs as a team that has checked in on Harper.
OK, whatever.
And yeah, there was the report back in December about Theo Epstein meeting with Boras and requesting Harper to circle back to the Cubs before accepting a final offer, but after Tom Ricketts saying there's no more money I have no hope that this will actually happen.
And even if Boras does call back I doubt Tom all of a sudden opens up his wallet.
Might just be Boras trying to get the Phillies to increase their offer one more time as the first full week of spring training is underway.
But hey, if you want to hope for a miracle, I won't stop you.
