The Los Angeles Dodgers won their first World Series title in 32 years, defeating the Rays 3-1 Tuesday night to clinch the championship in a 4-2 series win. So, now that the World Series has concluded, free agency is officially underway.
Players still have to wait five days before they can sign with a team, but on Wednesday 147 major leaguers were officially declared free agents.
That list will include two more players soon, as the Cubs will most definitely decline their team options on Jon Lester and Daniel Descalso. Meanwhile, Anthony Rizzo's $16.5 million option for 2021 will surely be picked up by the team.
And you'll most likely see a handful of more players from the Cubs hit the free agent market within the next six weeks, as the team will non-tender players as well before the Dec. 2, deadline. I'm not one to make huge predictions, but Albert Almora Jr. will probably be one of those who won't be tendered a contract this winter from the Cubs.
As far as the eight current free agents from the 2020 Cubs, I'd really only prefer to get Billy Hamilton back. He's the perfect backup outfielder and as long as you limit his actual starting time, Hamilton can be a valuable piece off the bench.
I'd love for Jon Lester to come back, but that contract has to be filled with incentives and at this point you can't count on anything more than number five starter production from him.
I know Jeremy Jeffress was amazing for the Cubs, but man, relievers are so up and down that I'd prefer the front office to give one of their young pitchers a shot instead. But hey, a cheap, one-year deal to bring back JJ, why not?
