The Tigers walked off against the Royals on Thursday, when Jordy Mercer hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was the eighth home run of the night by both teams and Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire made sure to take a playful jab at new Cubs outfielder Nick Castellanos.
Before the Tigers dealt Castellanos to the Cubs in a last-minute deal at the trade deadline, the right-handed hitter ripped Comerica Park for its huge dimensions in the outfield.
"This park is a joke," he said. "It's to the point where how are we going to be compared to the rest of the people in the league in terms of power numbers, OPS, slugging and all that stuff when we got a yard out here that's 420 feet straight across center field?
"I mean, they can move in center and right-center field. There's no reason I hit a ball 434 feet off (Nationals right-hander) Anibal Sanchez and it goes in the first row. That shouldn't happen. But, I'm not in charge of that, either."
So, after the Tigers and Royals each hit four home runs in Detroit on Thursday, Gardenhire had this little quip.
Good one, Ron, except for the fact that Castellanos was right. At the time of those comments the Tigers only had 34 home runs at home compared to 55 on the road in the same number of games.
Anyway, Castellanos was kinda busy on Thursday.
Castellanos has at least one hit in his first eight games with the Cubs, going 14-for-33, with three home runs, six doubles, nine runs scored, while walking twice and striking out only five times.
