The Cubs trailed all Saturday afternoon, but in the ninth inning they had a chance to beat the Angels. Down 6-5 with two outs and runners at second and third, Kyle Schwarber faced a 3-2 pitch and it sure did look like he checked his swing. That would have loaded the bases for David Bote.
Instead the third base umpire called Schwarber out, ruling it a swing and the Cubs left fielder was ready to get some blood. Here's the play that ended Saturday's game and Schwarber's reaction.
Javier Baez had to hold Schwarber back from the umpire.
It's been a frustrating week for Schwarber and it definitely hit its boiling point with that call to end the game,
Overall, Saturday was infuriating for the Cubs, as Willson Contreras looked awful at the plate striking out swinging with the bases loaded and then on three pitches in the ninth inning before Schwarber came up to bat. Contreras was also called for catchers interference again, while Brad Brach walked three batters including one with the bases loaded and Randy Rosario walked in a run with the bases loaded too.
Kyle Hendricks was better, but he still struggled commanding his pitches, leaving a lot of them over the heart of the plate and the Angels took advantage, scoring three runs in the second inning.
The Cubs are now 5-9.
