It was only a matter of time before the Cubs called up Ian Happ, who has finally sustained success for more than a few games down in Triple-A.
In 20 games in July, Happ is hitting .324, with a .451 OBP and .608 slugging %. He's walked almost as many times as he's struck out, 17 BB, 19 K. Overall in Iowa this year, Happ has a .795 OPS. Certainly not great considering the league is setting record numbers on offense, but Happ has definitely made adjustments since his early-season struggles.
Tommy Birch first broke the news and Cubs GM Jed Hoyer confirmed that Happ will join the Cubs on Friday.
Happ will primarily play in the outfield and might get a look at second, where he has played some at Triple-A this year.
While Hoyer confirmed Happ's promotion, he didn't hint at the corresponding move. However, if you thought that the reason for Happ's call up was because of Kris Bryant's knee soreness, here's a sigh of relief.
The Cubs currently have nine relievers in the bullpen. Tim Collins and Rowan Wick are probably the top two choices that could be sent away. In Collins' case, he would be DFA'd.
Daniel Descalso could also be released or maybe put on the injured list, but it really does look like it'll be a pitcher who gets replaced by Happ.
So, Happ coming up, Bryant good to go and a pitcher most likely getting optioned.
