The White Sox signed 11-year pro Alcides Escobar to a minor league deal back in spring training and the longtime shortstop put up a fine season at Triple-A, slashing .286/.343/.444, in 96 games. However, his time in the White Sox organization is over and it seems like things between him the front office ended badly.
The White Sox released Escobar on Friday to make room for AJ Reed I guess.
Despite Escobar's solid season it is coming in the same year that Triple-A started using the same baseballs as MLB. The offensive numbers are bonkers, so there's not much to be angry about the move. In 1,437 MLB games, Escobar posted a .636 OPS. That happens to be the same OPS Yolmer Sanchez has so far in 2019.
Pretty terrible.
Regardless, he's pretty upset at the White Sox and he's letting everyone know about it.
Maybe Escobar had a handshake agreement with the team that he would be called up in case of an injury and after being bypassed he wanted out to have the freedom to catch on with another team but the White Sox wouldn't grant him his release earlier?
Tim Anderson went on the injured list in late June and was out for more than a month, but the White Sox never called up Escobar, choosing Ryan Goins instead.
Not the best look to have veteran players mad at your organization. We've all see what's happened with the Bulls and the perception of that organization when it comes to free agents.
Players talk. Right now, Escobar is letting them know that the White Sox aren't to be trusted.
