On one hand, it is good to see that the Chicago White Sox aren't wasting too much time when deciding to get rid of bad players, but also, how about they stop acquiring bad players. On Wednesday, another White Sox experiment ended in failure and no one is surprised about it.
Last week, the White Sox made a bunch of roster moves that included the addition of veteran reliever Alex Colomé to the bullpen. Colomé, 34, was picked up by the White Sox in early April, signing a minor league deal with Chicago after the Washington Nationals released him before Opening Day. Tough scene when you can't make the cut on the Nationals, but the White Sox were more than happy to give Colomé a second chance.
Now, to be fair, the White Sox bullpen was bad, has been bad, is still bad, so desperate times call for desperate measures. Well, after making four appearances, the White Sox have seen enough of Colomé.
The team announced a couple of moves prior to their third game against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, as Colomé was designated for assignment. Taking his place in the bullpen will be 26-year-old, righty Nick Padilla. The White Sox are also calling up right-handed hitting outfielder Jake Marisnick, as Billy Hamilton is heading to the injured list with a hamstring strain.
Nick Padilla
So far in 2023, Nick Padilla has made 12 appearances out of the bullpen at Triple-A for the Charlotte Knights. The right-hander has posted a 3.86 ERA in 14 innings, striking out 15 batters. He has struggled with walks, giving up 11 free passes, that's led to a 1.43 WHIP, despite holding hitters to a .180 batting average.
The White Sox had previously called up Padilla in April, but he was sent back down to Triple-A before he was used in a game.
Padilla was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 13th round back in 2015. The right-handed pitcher remained in Tampa Bay's minor league system until the Chicago Cubs picked him up off waivers following the 2020 season. Padilla was great in 2022, posting a 2.21 ERA in 53 innings. He only made one MLB appearance with the Cubs and in Sept. 2022, the White Sox acquired him via waivers.
Jake Marisnick
Veteran outfielder Jake Marisnick is back in the majors and although he may not have the top tier speed and defensive skillset that Billy Hamilton posses, the 32-year-old can hold his own in those areas. So far at Triple-A this season, Marisnick has a .264/.407/.391 slash line in 108 plate appearances.
Overall in his MLB career, Marisnick just has not been able to hit enough to stay up, posting a .665 OPS in more than 2,000 plate appearances. In 2022, Marisnick slashed .234/.272/.390, with two home runs in 82 plate appearances with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
So, the White Sox have a new low-leverage reliever in Padilla and for at least a week, Marisnick will serve as a pinch-runner and defensive sub on the bench.
