It Appears The Red Sox Are Not Done Trading With The White Sox

Go ahead and add the Boston Red Sox as another team that is showing interest in White Sox starter Jose Quintana.

It is no secret that both Quintana and Todd Frazier have been on the trade market since the Winter Meetings, but after the Red Sox traded for Chris Sale, no one really expected them to be in play for more White Sox players. Boston has one of the top rotations and bullpens in baseball already, but in the playoffs, a team can never have enough arms. Rick Porcello is not having the year he had last year, and David Price is a big question mark with both his recent injuries and lack of playoff success. If Red Sox GM Dave Dombrowski is really serious about going all in this year, trading for Quintana would certainly show it. As for Frazier, he got off to a horrendous start, and is still just batting .187 with 3 home runs and 14 RBI's. However, with the Red Sox incredibly thin at third base, perhaps a change of scenery and the chance to play for a World Series would help Frazier snap out of his funk. Boston has obviously already traded Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech to Chicago, but while their farm took a hit, it still has a couple big time names. Third baseman Rafael Devers would have to be the headliner in any deal surrounding Jose Quintana. The 20-year-old is the no. 1 third base prospect in the minors, and no. 14 overall. He is having a great season in Double-A thus far, slashing .330/.398/.591. He is the Red Sox third baseman of the future, and has plenty of time to further hone his skills. With the White Sox having no longterm solution at the hot corner, he would be another great young asset to the current rebuild. The other name the Red Sox could toss around is left handed pitcher Jay Groome. Groome is the no. 2 lefty in the minors, and no. 36 overall at just 18 years of age. His fastball sits anywhere from 92-95 and has hit 97 and can get even better once he adds more muscle to his frame. His best pitch though is his curveball, which he throws with both power and location. His changeup, like most minor league pitchers, needs polish, but it has shown signs of becoming at least an average third offering. The big red flag on Groome is that he has had maturity issues in the past. He gets a free pass there since he is after all only 18. White Sox fans obviously want position players more than anything, but Groome would be another dynamite arm in the White Sox farm. It cannot be said enough that a team can never have too much pitching. Look at Lucas Giolito and Carlos Rodon for example. Giolito was once the no. 1 prospect in baseball, he has not lived up to the hype in Spring Training thus far and has slipped to no. 8 overall. And who knows when Carlos Rodon will be fully healthy again. The Red Sox sending scouts to look at Quintana and Frazier is surprising, but if a team is serious about winning, they will do whatever is necessary to field a championship team. Seeing Quintana pitch with Chris Sale in a World Series would be a really cool sight to see as well. The trade talk around the MLB usually picks up after the draft in June. Once that time comes, we will see just how serious the Red Sox are about making another deal with the South Side.
