The White Sox will either end up signing Zack Wheeler or they'll be one of the finalists for the free agent right-hander. But that's not Rick Hahn's lone focus this offseason, as he tries to address the White Sox starting rotation.
Hahn made his goals pretty clear for the winter, wanting another middle of the order bat with Yasmani Grandal, a right fielder, a designated hitter and not one but two starting pitchers. Wheeler is obviously at the top of Hahn's list, but he also has his eyes on the secondary pitching market.
And it turns out that veteran left-hander Cole Hamels is very much on the White Sox radar.
Hamels, who will be 36-years-old in 2020, joined the White Sox Talk Podcast this week and he certainly made a case for himself to join the South Side.
From Aug. 1, 2018 through June 23, 2019, Hamels made 28 starts with the Cubs and he was fantastic, posting a 2.67 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. Then he suffered a strained oblique muscle and when he returned to the Cubs rotation later in 2019, Hamels wasn't the same. He made 10 starts after returning from the injury and had a 5.79 ERA in 42 innings.
No matter who signs Hamels he'll most likely get a two-year deal, three years at the very most. Hamels has been projected to receive a two-year contract worth between $28 million-$30 million.
If the White Sox do end up signing Hamels, you just have to hope he's the second-best starter they pick up and not the biggest addition to the rotation.
